The Lights Go Out

by Alison Whelan on 19 August, 2015

The lighting replacement programme for Ely is gathering pace, with more and more plans being released. The overall pattern is a 10% reduction in street lights, with plans to reduce hours that most lights operate.

The plans for Ely are available at http://www.lightingcambridgeshire.com/new-lighting-programme.htm?street&town=Ely

But those plans won’t affect much of Kings Avenue, Allen Road, Turner Drive and Orford Close: roads where Barratt Homes have failed to complete the work necessary for the County Council to adopt the roads.

But the problem goes even further when the pedestrian crossing stops working.

It wasn’t working on 6th August and was reported to Barratt Homes on 7th and then again on 17th August.

Finally on 19th August Barratt Homes replied:

“I can confirm that Barratt are still responsible for the crossing on Kings Avenue.

I have requested the attendance of a signalling contractor who advise that they will endeavour to attend by the end of this week.”

Saturday, a blind man was trying to cross Kings Avenue. The secret button http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/blogHidden Buttons-ouch-22706881 was of no help to him. I just wonder how long he would have been there if a kind person hadn’t noticed his plight.

For those wondering why I continue fighting to solve these problems, the plight of that blind man is a good enough reason for me.
