A Crossing for Lynn Road

by Alison Whelan on 23 January, 2015

Brian, a local resident approached me about problems with crossing Lynn Road in Ely: many children are required to cross the road on a regular basis, not to mention old and disabled people. The road has become part of the main route for HGVs through the City and yet there is not a single light controlled crossing. Inevitably, there is going to be an accident.

I spoke to a former resident who moved away because their son nearly ended up under an HGV. Yet the County Council sees no need for a crossing. Previous attempts by the public have come to nothing, even when Councillors have offered their support.

Working with Brian, we have launched a petition calling on the County Council to build a light controlled crossing on Lynn Road between Cam Drive and Kings Avenue. This will solve some of the problems, but not all of them. In fact, there needs to be at least one further crossing towards the City Centre, and crossings to safely get over Kings Avenue.  Please add your support to the petition at: http://tinyurl.com/nnt7u5h

This is the text of the letter:

To Residents of Lynn Road Area

Crossing Lynn Road Safely

I have been approached by a local resident, Brian Hendrich, about the lack of a light controlled crossing on Lynn Road.

There are many children that need to cross the road either to catch buses to school, or to make their way to Ely College. When the new school is built to the north of Cam Drive, the need to ensure there are adequate crossing points will increase further.

The route from the A10 along Cam Drive, into Lynn Road and then onto Kings Avenue has been designated as the main transport route so that HGVs will avoid travelling through the City centre. The growth of North Ely to date has resulted in a significant increase in traffic along this route and the further planned developments will see a greatly increased level of traffic.

The risk to pedestrians attempting to cross these roads is already serious, and will only get worse over the coming years.

Safe crossing points should already be in place, but the Council has failed to make these basic infrastructure improvements as the City has grown.

Brian has launched the following petition and I very much hope you will be able to support it:

Petition to Cambridgeshire County Council

We the undersigned call upon the Council to install a pelican crossing across Lynn Road, between the roundabout with Cam Drive and the Junction with Kings Avenue. This crossing is needed to create a safe place to cross the road, particularly for children.

If you have any feedback on this or any other issue please do get in touch.

Kind regards

Alison Whelan
